| Blockley is one of the Cotswolds’ best-kept secrets. The village is a conservation area within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village lies sheltered in a deep valley, with Blockley Brook meandering down to the village and through the grounds of Lower Brook House. The brook used to provide power for no less than 12 mills, as listed in the Domesday Book. Several of these were silk mills in the early 19th century, after which the rooms at Lower Brook House are now named. The village church, with its magnificent tower built in 1180, stands regally in view of Lower Brook House. Wonderful walks will enable you to discover Blockley’s charming 17th and 18th century houses and gardens, watered by the area’s numerous natural springs. There are many other delightful Cotswold villages nearby. Chipping Campden, Broadway, Stow-on-the-Wold and the Slaughters are all within easy reach of Lower Brook House. The surrounding countryside is the Cotswolds at its very best, with rolling hills and fields enclosed by dry-stone walls; elegant woodland gracing the landscape; and tiny hamlets nestling snugly in the hillside. Blenheim Palace and Warwick Castle are no more than a leisurely drive away and 2 of Britain’s finest spa towns, Cheltenham and Bath, are also close at hand. Other local attractions include the Wildfowl Trust at Slimbridge and the Roman villa at Chedworth. The area is also blessed with a number of outstanding sporting attractions, including National Hunt racing at Cheltenham, as well as some of the country’s most beautiful golf courses. |
